And speaking of travel…

So, having been in quite a few hotel rooms, I have a few comments to make.

Please understand, I’m not picky! I’m not just a little bit “not picky”, I’m a WHOLE LOTTA not picky! I generally don’t care about the floor, the view, whether I’m close to the elevator, whether my room has had feathers, and I have no problem with touching the sheets. May be if I thought about it, or “really knew”, I would …or should ….but I’m not. For all my friends and colleagues who are…go you! Good for you! But one of the ways that I take care of myself is to not worry about things that just don’t matter to me. In that way, I think I’m caring for myself…to let it go.

Instead, I prefer to get annoyed by the things I can’t control. Hmm. Somehow, I don’t know the wisdom of that choice! But, here are a few, just for now…

? Do your walls really need to be made of rice paper? When I, or my employer, are paying almost $200 per night on a room, I don’t expect to hear the entire TV show, phone conversation, cough, sneeze, and snore of the people in the rooms on either side of me. Thank heaven I’m not traveling with a child, because I would probably be pacing the lobby so as not to disturb my neighbors. And I know that we all must be single, old and/or asexual, because NO ONE, is having good sex. …if they were, I’d have heard it.

? What’s with the doors that weigh a ton? I get to my room, insert the key, and then I actually need muscles to open the door. And then it closes on me when I have my suitcase halfway through. Given the paper thin walls, it certainly doesn’t soundproof anything! I can hear when several neighbors have gone in and out of their rooms….ka thud! Not cool at 3 a.m. Just because you can’t sleep, I don’t really care to join you!

! Thank you so much for being inducted into the group of concierge lounge eligible travelers…but hotel, check on who you have as a host! ? Just because we don’t want to go to the hockey game you offered us “fantastic” tickets for, is no reason to be irritated with us! Don’t make the lounge an uncomfortable place to be because of your hovering! And don’t escort us to the door, looking for a tip.

And finally….? Who thought that “regulators” (motion sensors) on the air system was a good idea? This is the second hotel, in as many trips, that after I fall into a pleasant sleep, I’ve woken up a few hours later and had to wave my arms to get the air to turn back on. Really? If I fall asleep, I’d like to stay that way and not have to get up or move to keep the air moving!

In spite of all that, I love it….and since I’m not picky, if I didn’t have these little things, I’d have no good story to tell. Or may be, I’d just have to make one up.
