I’m just not that structured

After trying to spend a few weeks scheduling everything, I have found that it just isn’t for me.  Of course, I’m not going to abandon scheduling completely, and some might think that I didn’t give it a fair chance, but let me share with you some of the goods and the bads that lead to my decision.

The Goods

  • I scheduled on a google calendar so it gave me a graphic representation of my day.
  • I had organized productivity with my tasks in one place (within the calendar).
  • Certain things that were important to me, like time for meditation, writing, and working out were usually successfully accomplished.

Yes, well, that’s about all of the goods.

The Bads

  • Because my work calendar is shared with my assistant and she is able to add appointments, there were a few conflicts.
  • My boss was also a problem when it came to my scheduling.  When I am told that you need to come down for a meeting now, I have to go.  I don’t have the flexibility to schedule it on my calendar.  So much for the plans I’d made during that time!
  • The biggest problem I had was that it took the joy out of the things that I wanted to do, the fun things that were for me.  If they became a block on my calendar with a time constraint, they were another thing to be checked off.

So, my calendar has become more flexible.  I’m taking the lessons that I learned, the ones that helped me feel productive, and integrating those.  But as for scheduling and blocking off every minute during the day, it just doesn’t work for me.  There is something to be said for spontaneity!
